Anthony F. Ambrose

Anthony F. Ambrose has devoted most of his adult life to the service and sacrifice for
the citizens of New Jersey. Anthony commenced his law enforcement career in 1986 as
a Police Officer with the Newark, New Jersey Police Department, ultimately serving as
Chief of Police and then Police Director. His diverse assignments included Homicide
Investigator, Internal Affairs Supervisor, Supervisor/Instructor at the Newark Police
Academy, and was the weekly Command Status Conferences (COMSTAT) facilitator.
He is a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Anthony has held a multitude of command and executive level positions in the Newark
Police Department, having the sole and exclusive privilege of having served as the
Chief of Police, Police Director, and Director of Public Safety. He has also served as the
Chief of Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Undersheriff of
Operations for the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. In all these positions, Anthony has
been a catalyst for positive and progressive policing, with a strong emphasis on
relentless follow-up and being results-oriented. During his leadership tenure in the City
of Newark, the City experienced a record low number of homicides for five years
straight. In 2019, the number of homicides and crime overall in Newark reached its
lowest level in nearly five decades.
Anthony has received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Administrative Arts degrees
from Fairleigh Dickinson University and is also an adjunct college professor, providing
specialized instruction in Police Management. During his 35-year career, Anthony has
been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations.
Anthony’s diverse professional assignments and experiences, along with his attributes
of innovation, attention to detail and relentless follow-up, have provided him with the
